Sanctions for Canada over Polar Bear hunting. On Monday, the Center for Biological Diversity filed a request for trade sanctions against Canada for violations of the 1973 Agreement on the Conservation of Polar Bears. The Canadian territory of Nunavut has quadrupled its number of polar bears allowed to be hunted this season. Only about 700 bears from the Western Hudson Bay pack still survive today. This number is down from 1200 bears only twenty years ago.
